Door Knobs

The handles on your doors will enhance the appearance of your house and make it easier for you to open and close them. They are available in a wide variety of finishes, colors and styles to complement your decor. If yours has begun to show signs of wear or require an upgrade it is possible to replace them in a few easy steps.

You must locate the spindle, or shaft through which the knob is inserted to the door. Some knobs have a tiny hole that you can insert an incredibly small screwdriver to loosen the set screws holding the handle in place. Some have a thin slot or hole through which allows you to press an activated detent pin that is spring-activated using a flathead. When you press this pin, the latch mechanism releases and lets you pull or push on the knob.

After you have ahold of the spindle or shaft, take the knob off of the door and replace it with the new one. Align it correctly and check that the latch functions properly before tightening the new set screws.

After replacing the knob, you can place the latch rod over the door's hole. Interlock it with the rod system on the second knob. Make sure the holes are aligned then thread the screws for the latch plate and tighten the screws.

Some people opt for a smooth or brushed finish for their door hardware to give it an elegant, modern look that complements other furniture in their homes. Some prefer a rustic look that goes well with farmhouse-styled rooms. If you have a member of your family with mobility issues, you might prefer an rim or lever lock that require less pressure to operate.

Other aspects are being looked at more and more when it comes to the design of door handles for doors. Accessibility and control of infections are the main issues that have led to the development of new designs for handle handles and hinges including ones that can be operated using the forearms of a person.

Latch

The latch that keeps your door handle open can wear out from the wear and tear of use. It is simple to change the latch on your door handle. This will result in an enormous difference in the way it opens and closes.

Depending on the type of knob you are using depending on the type of handle you have, the latch may be a part of the knob or it might be an independent piece attached to the door itself. In either case, you'll need to follow the same procedure to remove and replace. It's easy to remove the old latch, especially in the case of doors with a "magic" button. It is located on the opposite side of the knob, this little pressure-slot is what you have to press to take the latch right out of the handle and out of the latching mechanism.

If your handle does not have this magical button, the first step is to take off any cover plates that sit over the latch plate. These are usually rectangular or circular and can be removed using a screwdriver to pry them off of the handle. Some have a slot where you can insert your screwdriver, whereas others simply snap off.

Next, you will want to remove the two machine screws that secure the latch and the plate to the door handle. These are the shorter screws with a sharp tip - you will be required to keep them in a safe place to reuse them in subsequent steps. Once the screws are removed, you can remove the latch plate and the mechanism from the hole, and then set it aside.

You can now begin installing the new latch. Insert the latch plate into the door hole and secure it using the hardware provided. Make sure that the square pin on the interior of the latch is facing the latching mechanism inside the replacement window handle and aligns with the other holes for screws in the handle. Then, push the exterior latch plate onto and secure it using the screws provided.

Strike Plate

It is common to replace a door handle because it is loose or isn't locking properly. This is often caused by malfunctioning components of the latching mechanism, like the strike plate being too short or moved up or down on the doorjamb with time. This simple project will allow you to replace your existing strike plate with a longer, new one that will give you better security and keep your door closed.

Apply a lipstick or other marking material on the latch bolt to determine if it's the strike plate. Close the door, and then try to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate's hole, it indicates that the plate is too small and the door will not latch. If the mark is higher or below the strikeplate hole, the strikeplate is likely to have been moved up or downward on the doorjamb.

It is possible to screw the new strikeplate into the old one by using the screws supplied with it, based on the door. But, you may have to drill holes prior to drilling and then chisel some of the wood to make sure it's a good fit. If this is the case, be careful not to cut too deeply or you could cause damage to the integrity of your doorjamb.

You can also try installing a new strike plate, which will give the lock a stronger hold on the door and requires more force to open it. Typically it requires two long screws that secure the strike plate to the frame of the door. To accomplish this, you'll need to take off the existing strike plate and then drill and chisel away the wood to make space for the new one.

This difficult-to-find strike plate is made of solid brass and has a heavy-duty thickness. It's specifically designed to be used with antique rim locks. It comes with wood screws and machine screws, ensuring that you have the correct equipment for your task. Be aware that wood screws have a pointy tip, whereas the machine ones are more blunt.
