Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet shop on the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would change our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with him has challenged the belief that birds could only mimic human speech without any understanding of meaning.

What is Alex?

What was Alex like in terms of intelligence?

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was awarded the status of National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. Alex was able to accomplish so much during his lifetime due to his strength of character, and his determination to live life according to his own terms.
